Is Hunching Over Your Laptop Hurting Your Neck?

The Growing Problem of Hunched-Over Laptop Syndrome

The average person uses a computer, typically a laptop, on a daily basis for several hours, whether is it viewing work e-mails, staying up-to-date with news, and even communicating with friends and family on social media platforms. In one study, it was found that people between the ages of 16 and 24 spend about 27 hours a week viewing the Internet from their laptops. Could you be a victim from H.O.L.S. (Hunched-Over Laptop Syndrome) and not even know it? When you constantly look down at your laptop screen, you are putting tension on your neck’s muscular and skeletal structures. After an hour or so, the muscles become burdened with excess load and thus get strained. Over time, you can develop neck issues such as cervical muscle strains, loss of normal cervical curve, misalignment/subluxation of the neck and mid-back vertebrae and even herniated cervical discs from H.O.L.S. Yikes!

A Simple Solution

The solution to H.O.L.S. is similar to the one we gave you about the Text Neck Syndrome. Your laptop screen needs to be near eye-level distance to protect your neck from excessive neck flexion and unwanted tension and pain. Try stacking books underneath your laptop or buy a laptop stand. Once your laptop screen is raised closer to eye level, your neck will start to feel a whole lot better. Also, try to take mini-breaks and stretch every 30 minutes. Remember a tension-free neck is a happy and healthy neck!

Chiropractic Care Can Help

A proven and safe way to treat neck pain is through chiropractic adjustments and simple exercises that will promote a more healthy range of motion, correct spinal alignment, and proper posture which in turn alleviates the pain associated with this common problem.

What Our Patients Say

Paul G.
auto accident
“I was not a stranger to chiropractic; I had seen two or three doctors previous to the accident. But it was at this time that I had the great good fortune to meet and be treated by Dr. Patrick Smith. Dr. Smith is an extraordinary diagnostician and superb practitioner of his science and art. As pain and stiffness worsened Pat developed a course of treatment that was, and is, most effective in keeping me mobile, flexible and almost, but not entirely, pain free.”
Kay L.
shoulder replacement
“Treatment at Smith Chiropractic has been unerringly professional, kind and so highly intelligent that my 40 years of hospital work has led me to make Smith Chiropractic my first stop whenever I need to consider surgery or medical care or make medical decisions.”
Cindi P. (parent)
sports injuries
“Dr. Smith has treated many of my children's injuries from recovery after broken bones, shoulder tendonitis, pinched nerves, hip flexor problems, and a torn calf muscle. His deep knowledge of how to treat athletes has allowed them to play through their injuries, rather than taking a significant amount of time off from their sport, along with his ability to understand and quickly diagnose a problem, in my opinion, has prevented more severe issues. ”
